Times of the Day - Learning about Time

prettylittleartspace

Our theme for this week of 3-ka-FUN is ‘Learning about Time’. So, first-off, we are here to talk about the most basic concept of time i.e. Times of the day. The aim of this DIY project is to teach kids about day and night. As basic as this concept is, it is always a good practice to use props and projects to clarify basic concepts. It goes a long way as the concepts stay with the children.

For this project we are creating a day and night sheet. To make the same, follow the steps given below. It is easy as a blink but effective too!

Supplies needed:

Firstly, assemble all the supplies needed as have been mentioned below.

Step 1: Take an A4 size cartridge sheet or any slightly rough surface sheet and draw a circle in center using the smaller lid. Colour this circle white using oil pastel colour.

Step 2: Now divide paper in half treating one side as day and other as night. Make sure to fold the sheet so that there isn’t a chance of day and night colours getting merged.

Step 3: Take shades of yellow and orange. Start with the lightest shade of yellow then move gradually to darker shades and then to orange from circle to outwards. This will represent the day portion when the sun is showing in the sky.

Step 4: In the same way, create night scene with shades of blue and purple moving from light to dark shades from circle to outwards. This will represent the night portion when the moon is showing in the sky.

Step 5: Then with the help of a tissue, smudge all the shades together (day and night side separately) to give a smooth look and merge all the shades.

Step 6: In the night sky add some sparkling stars with white acrylic paint. Also, with an old toothbrush spray some white colour to give a look of stars and galaxy. Seal the entire day and night portion with any fixer.

Step 7: Create another circle (black dotted) around the white circle with the bigger lid. Write the time divisions around it as shown in the pic. Mention day and night in the center. Create small labels to teach children different timings in the day.

**You can later use it as an activity and ask your children to place the labels in right order. Bonus Activity!

Your activity is now ready! Enjoy!
