Fine Motor Skills as a stream has multiple branches under it and hence focuses on multi-faceted development of a child. One such stream is Scissor Skills and it deserves a separate focus of its own. Scissor Skill Development has various benefits, some of them being:

  • Strengthening of hand and finger muscles. Squeezing the scissors with the help of fingers leads to their development.

  • Increases Hand-eye coordination. Using scissors to cut something needs proper skills to execute.

  • Develops Bilateral Coordination. While using scissors, both the hands are doing different things hence bilateral coordination is developed.

Cautions while doing scissor activity:

  • Give your children the right size of pair of scissors, ones that are closest to their hand size.

  • Use child safe scissors for initial levels.

  • Properly demonstrate how to use a scissor and in what ways can using it be harmful.

Cut the Dough Cake

Dough is fun to play with for kids. Kids love it as it provides them freedom to make and break. What introduce in this activity is also the freedom to cut the clay. To make it more interesting we have added the element of making the clay into a cake to give the sense of creation and pretend play for the kids.

Cut & Shape

Cutting the shapes from sheets and making them into figurines, isn't that a fun activity? This activity is for kids aged 3-6 years. It not only provides them practice to enhance their scissor skills but also gives them creative freedom to cut different shapes and make different items from their shapes according to their own free mind. Fine Motor Skills and Creative development both in one activity!

Chop Us Weekly

An activity to combine Basic Life Skills with Scissor Skill Development and a very efficient one at that. Teaching your kids basic grooming skills is very important and to make them accustomed to it as being a good habit is a very tedious task. So it is best to introduce such things as fun activities which makes it interesting for them to engage in.

Cut Me Short

Another activity combining learning of basic life skills along with development of fine motor skills or as in this case, scissor skills. Kids should be aware of their basic grooming activities such as trimming their nails and hair on regular basis. These activities are to make them aware of these essential activities of daily life.

Straw Bubble Blower

Last activity for the week is cutting the straws with using scissors but instead of wasting the cut straws we reused these straws to make a bubble blower! Hence, while we are focusing on developing the fine motor skills we aren't wasting the supplies and reusing them to make another fun activity for the kids!
