Clock-Talk Monster - Learning about Time

prettylittleartspace

Trying to teach your kids how to read time can be tiresome. You have to teach them about clock, the general concept of time and then give them a good hands-on practice from time to time so that they are confident in what they do. Today we have got an interesting DIY project that is not only efficient in practicing but also fun to use for kids.

We have created this easy DIY Clock-Talk Monster that has a time stripe coming out of it. This time stripe is to be pulled out and it’ll show a time. The kids then need to arrange the clock hands to the time shown on the time stripe. This is a creative learning project that will help kids with time reading.

Follow below for the step-by-step tutorial of how to create this project.

Supplies needed:

Firstly, assemble all the supplies needed as have been mentioned below.

Step 1: Take a scrap cardboard and cut a circular piece out of it with the help of a quarter plate.

Step 2: Cut a 1-inch bigger circular ring than the circle created in the Step 1 from a scrap cardboard.

Step 3: Paint the ring with Fevicryl red acrylic colour. Cut the ring from a point as shown in the picture. This is to keep the ring detachable so that the minute markings can be removed to move the kids to the next level.

Step 4: Paste a yellow paper on the circle created in Step 1. Attach the red ring created in Step 3 with the yellow circle from the back with the help of a tape.

Step 5: Take any coloured paper and cut it into 6 column stripes. Create rows of ½ inch height in each column stripe. In these stripes, you now write times at 5 mins interval as shown in the picture.

Step 6: In the circular apparatus created in Step 4, you write the hour numbers on the edge of the yellow portion and minute numbers on the red portion as on the clock. Use a felt paper to cut the minute hand (slightly smaller) and hour hand (slightly bigger) of the clock.

Step 7: Take the old used Pringles box and cut a slit in its center. The slit should be ½ inch in height and wide enough to accommodate the Time Stamp stripes created in Step 5. This slit will act as the mouth of the monster.

Step 8: At the top of the Pringles box, slit a ½ inch section to insert the clock that was created in Step 6.

Step 9: Now wrap the Pringles box with a red paper. To give it the character of a monster, stick eyes, hands and smile as shown in the picture.

Step 10: Firstly, add clock hands with the help of a board pin. Now, insert the clock to the slot made on top of the box.

*How to use this monster has been shown at the end in Bonus videos!

The Clock-Talk Monster is now ready! Enjoy!
